First off there’s the initial meeting with the ghostwriter. It’s a very close working relationship, so it’s important you get on. Assuming you hit it off, the next meeting is the planning session.

This is when you get to talk through your ideas (or outline what your publisher needs if you already have a deal).

Working together your ideas begin to take shape, and the structure of your book begins to form. After that meeting, your ghostwriter will put together a proposal/outline of your book for you to give your feedback. Once a plan is agreed it’s time to start talking.

Several interviews will be needed as the project progresses (possibly face-to-face, sometimes by phone or Skype). Using your input, your ghostwriter will go away and shape the information into a coherent and interesting piece of work, which may take many months to complete.

Even though you’re not physically doing the writing, you will be heavily involved in the process and will have to commit the necessary time to your ghostwriter.

Once the initial draft is ready, you become the editor and are encouraged to make the work your own by changing phrasing, adding anecdotes and clarifying ideas.

Then, you work together to polish it into the finished article. Once the final payment is received, it’s yours to publish.

Ghostwriting isn’t cheap, but it will help you get that book finished, elevate your standing in your industry and potentially, boost your business and earning potential.
